ECSF awards grants once a year, in January
Grant applications for 2011 are due on Sept. 15 and must be submitted by an
Episcopal congregation or Episcopal organization in Southern Ohio. Churches
may apply on behalf of community-based organizations but the request will
only be considered if the applicant church shows significant direct
involvement of its people and other resources in the project.

application forms and instructions.
2010 grants total $122,650
Freewill donations fuel ECSF's grants budget, with the Eastertide Chocolate Fest as the peak event of the year. Eleven-year-old Kate Gislason won the People's Choice award for her Warp Drive Pie at this year's fest, held at St. Thomas, Terrace Park. This year's fabulous bakers, silent auction donors, bidders, tasters, and many generous donations by people who couldn't attend raised over $18,000, more than twice as much as last year!
The projects funded and grants awarded are listed here. The board awarded 41 grants totaling $122,650 - 71.9% of the full amount churches requested. In addition, St. James, Cincinnati received $1,700 in computer equipment through an Ohio Benefit Bank grant awarded to ECSF Jan. 18.
While down from 2009, this grants budget is higher than 2008’s.
Several ministries applied for double or more the amount they asked for 2009, reflecting the steep increase in the numbers of people turning to them for aid as Ohio’s unemployment and foreclosure rates continue to soar.
This is the first time in six years that ECSF has had to cut rather than increase grant levels. The grants budget comes from free-will donations, which are used exclusively for grants (not ECSF overhead). Many donors were grievously affected by the same recession that is driving so many people to seek aid from churches for the first time.
The best way to increase the grants budget next year is for more people to pitch in. About 500 people have given to ECSF in the past five years, a fraction of 10,000 Episcopal households in this diocese. If that number doubled, at an average gift of $100, the grants budget would grow by $50,000!
If you would be willing to host a meeting in your house to introduce friends to the opportunity to have great impact in Ohio by contributing to ECSF, please contact ECSF’s Ariel Miller at ECSF@eos.net. |
